Preventing a Carrier from shipping to specific Countries, Regions, or Zones

Overview

In certain scenarios, you may want to tell ShipperHQ not to show a certain carrier when shipping to a specific Region/State, Country, or ZIP/Postal Code or Codes.

There are 2 ways you can do this, either at a Carrier Level, or via a Carrier Rule. We would recommend that you set at a Carrier Level if you are displaying a generic error message to the customer e.g. No shipping available, if you want a specific error message then use a Carrier Rule.

We show 2 scenarios here to demonstrate how to restrict the carrier to specific zones.

Scenario 1: Preventing UPS for shipments to PO Boxes

As there is no exclude capability on Carriers you need a carrier rule to cover this scenario.

Due to legal restrictions, most carriers in the US other than the United States Postal Service (USPS) can’t delivery to PO Box addresses. ShipperHQ allows you to handle this by using the pre-defined “PO Box” Zone and a Carrier Rule to hide options which aren’t available when a customer enters a PO Box address.

Setup

This assumes that you’ve defined at least a USPS and UPS carrier.

  1. On the Carrier Rules page click the Add New button
  2. Name this Carrier Rule something appropriate like “Hide UPS for PO Box addresses” in the Name field of the Overview panel
  3. Under the Applicable Shipping Methods panel, select all of the Shipping Methods under your UPS carrier which you’ll find in the Live Shipping Methods Assigned field
  4. Under the Conditions panel in the Apply to Zones field, select the pre-defined “US POBox” Zone
  5. Under the Actions panel, set the Action to Perform to “Hide Shipping Methods”
  6. Save your Carrier Rule

Now, if a customer enters a PO Box address, UPS won’t be shown as an option preventing unnecessary returns, saving you customer service hours, and making your customers happier.

Scenario 2: Preventing UPS shipping to Puerto Rico

Setup using Carrier Display Restriction

This assumes that you’ve defined at least a UPS carrier.

  1. Edit the UPS Carrier
  2. Under Display Restrictions specify the zone you wish the carrier to ship to (US 48 in the example shown)
  3. Click Save

Restrict Shipping

Now rates will only show for the US 48 states.

Setup using Carrier Rule

This assumes that you’ve defined at least a UPS carrier.

  1. On the Carrier Rules page click the Add New button
  2. Name this Carrier Rule something appropriate like “Hide UPS for Puerto Rico” in the Name field of the Overview panel
  3. Under the Applicable Shipping Methods panel, select all of the Shipping Methods under your UPS carrier which you’ll find in the Live Shipping Methods Assigned field
  4. Under the Conditions panel in the Apply to Zones field, either select a Zone you’ve already set up or click Add New and create a Zone including Puerto Rico
  5. Under the Actions panel, set the Action to Perform to “Hide Shipping Methods”
  6. Enter an appropriate Error Message to display if required
  7. Save your Carrier Rule

Now, if a customer enters an address in Puerto Rico, UPS won’t be shown as an option preventing unnecessary returns, saving you customer service hours, and making your customers happier.
