How Packing Boxes work with Packing Rules

Overview

Boxes set to be available to all products are available for products assigned to packing rules with a few exceptions. Here are a few scenarios that outline how packing rules use boxes.

Scenarios

  1. Products assigned to a “Pack according to box rules” packing rule will have available for it all of the boxes that are explicitly selected on that rule + all boxes set to be “available for all products”
  2. Products assigned to a “Pack separately” packing rule will pack into a box if there’s a box explicitly selected on the rule (not required). It doesn’t matter if there are other boxes set to be “available for all products”, those don’t change behavior here.
  3. Products assigned to a “Pack in multiple fixed boxes” packing rule will only use the boxes set within the rule, so boxes set outside of this rule (both available and not available to all products) are not considered here.

Note that carrier settings and boxes assigned to specific carriers will affect the outcomes of packing rules. For example, if a box in your list is set to be “available for all products”, but is assigned to a specific carrier, then that box will only be considered for packing when cart conditions allow that specific carrier.

Examples

Example 1

  • Product assigned to a “Pack according to box rules” packing rule
  • “Box A”, “Box B”, and “Box C” are selected on the packing rule as possible boxes
  • “Box X” and “Box Y” are not selected on the rule but are set to be available for all products

Result: SHQ will look at Box A, Box B, Box C, Box X, and Box Y when determining which box to use for the product.

Example 2

  • Product assigned to a “Pack according to box rules” packing rule
  • “Box A”, “Box B”, and “Box C” are selected on the packing rule as possible boxes
  • “Box X” and “Box Y” are not selected on the rule and NOT set to be available for all products

Result: SHQ will look at Box A, Box B, and Box C when determining which box to use. Box X and Box Y will not be considered.

Example 3

  • Product assigned to a “Pack separately” packing rule
  • “Box A” is selected on the packing rule as the “Packing Box for Product”
  • “Box X” and “Box Y” are not selected on the rule but are set to be available for all products

Result: SHQ will use Box A. Box X and Box Y are not considered. Note, if Box A wasn’t added to this packing rule, a SHQ_CUSTOM box would be created to pack the product separately.

Example 4

  • Product assigned to a “Pack into multiple fixed boxes” packing rule
  • “Box R” and Box S” are added to the packing rule as the “Ship via Multiple Boxes”
  • All other boxes will not be considered for this packing rule—only boxes created within the rule.

Result: SHQ will use Box R and S to pack the product.
