How to Split a Product into Multiple Packages

Overview

On each Carrier, you have your Package settings which contain minimum and maximum packing weight as well as maximum carrier shipment weight.  You also need to consider how you would like your products to pack per carrier and can control how ShipperHQ splits your products among multiple packages or prevent this from happening using the two checkboxes labeled “Don’t Show Carrier When Product Weight > Max Package Weight” checkbox and the “Allow Products to be Split Across Boxes During Packing” checkbox.

Table

This table will expand on the results of 2 scenarios and the 4 different combinations you can have from checking off the “Don’t Show Carrier When Product Weight > Max Package Weight” checkbox and the “Allow Products to be Split Across Boxes During Packing” checkbox.  Each Checkbox has been Abbreviated for easier visibility.

Max Package weight = 50 lbs

Product 1 = 70 lbs

Product 2 = 30 lbs

Check Product Weight Split Across Boxes Results
✓  ✓ If Product 1 is in the cart then an error will show since this one product is bigger than the Max Package weight which is set at 50 lbs.  This happens because the  Check Product Weight Checkbox sees that a single product weighs more than the max package weight.

If 2 items of Product 2 are put in the cart then ShipperHQ will use two boxes and put 50 lbs in one box and 10 lbs in the next box.  Notice that the split across boxes only happens in this scenario if there are multiple products which are all below the max package weight.

✓ If Product 1 is in the cart then an error will show since this one product is bigger than the Max Package weight which is set at 50 lbs.  This happens because the  Check Product Weight Checkbox sees that a single product weighs more than the max package weight.

If 2 items of Product 2 are put in the Cart then ShipperHQ will use 2 boxes and put 30 lbs in one box and 30 lbs in another.

✓  If product 1 is in the cart then ShipperHQ will use 2 boxes in this scenario. 50 lbs will go in one box and the remaining 20 lbs of product 1 will go in the second box.

If 2 items of Product 2 are put in the cart then ShipperHQ will Split the 60 lbs that the product weighs in two boxes. One box with 50 lbs of product and the second box will have the remaining 10 lbs.

If Product one is in the cart then you will get an error and not see rates for this carrier since the Product is 70 lbs and the max package weight for this scenario is set to 50 lbs and split across boxes is not checked off.

If 2 items of Product 2 are put in the cart then ShipperHQ will pack this in 2 boxes. One 30 lbs product (not split) in one box and one 30 lbs product in the other.

IMPORTANT: If you are using a “pack into multiple fixed boxes dimensional rule”, the max package weight will take into account the boxed weight instead of product weight and allow rates as long as you have “split across boxes” unchecked. You should not be able to create box with more weight than max package specified on carrier.
