FreightWise Carrier Timing Out or Not Returning Rates
Table of Contents
FreightWise is a 3PL that offers both LTL and Small Parcel methods from a single carrier connection. When both method types are enabled on the same carrier, LTL shipments can cause Small Parcel API calls to time out, resulting in no rates returned at checkout.
The fix is to create two separate FreightWise carriers in ShipperHQ — one for LTL methods only, one for Small Parcel methods only. ShipperHQ will send a flag to the FreightWise API specifying which method type to request, so each carrier only calls the appropriate underlying service.
Resolving the Timeout
Create two FreightWise carrier instances — one for LTL and one for Small Parcel. Both use the same FreightWise credentials.
For each carrier:
- Go to Carriers and click + New.
- Select Live Rate Carrier, search for FreightWise, and proceed through setup.
- Under Shipping Methods, enable only the methods for that carrier type (LTL or Small Parcel) and deselect all others.
- Save the carrier.
FreightWise Small Parcel Methods
The following methods are Small Parcel and should be enabled on your Small Parcel carrier instance. All other FreightWise methods are LTL.
FAQ
Will I need to update my shipping rules after splitting the carriers?
Rules that reference your combined FreightWise carrier by name should be updated to point to the appropriate new carrier. Rules that apply to all carriers or use method-level conditions will continue to work without changes.
My FreightWise carrier still isn't returning rates after splitting. What else should I check?
Confirm that credentials are validated on both carrier instances and that each has at least one shipping method enabled. If rates still don't appear, contact ShipperHQ support.
