Managing Oversized Length Fees in ShipperHQ

Reviewing Automatic Oversized Length Fees and Creating Manual Oversized Fees

Overview

When shipping carriers detect that a package exceeds standard length limits, Oversized Length Fees are applied automatically by the carrier. In some cases, it's necessary to add another manual oversized length fee.

Automatic Oversized Length Fees by Carriers

Most carriers, automatically add an Oversized Length Fee when a shipment exceeds their defined length thresholds. These thresholds and corresponding fees vary by carrier and may change over time. The fee is automatically calculated and included in the carrier's returned rate, no manual configuration is required for it to appear in ShipperHQ.

Adding Additional Fees via Shipping Rules

If you need to apply an extra charge on top of the carrier’s automatic fee, this can be achieved through Shipping Rules using Shipping Groups or Boxes in ShipperHQ or Box Surcharges. Specifically, you can target boxes within the Advanced Settings of a shipping rule to control when additional fees are added.

Note: It’s not currently possible to target the length of a product directly. Instead, the product must be packed into a box, after which a rule can apply an additional fee or a box surcharge can be added.

How to Apply a Shipping Group Surcharge

  1. Firstly create a new shipping called 'Oversized'

  2. Go to your Shipping Rules settings > Create or edit a rule.

  3. Configure the rule to apply a surcharge (flat amount or percentage) whenever that shipping group/product is used.

  4. Apply this rate to each shipping group in cart > Apply To These Shipping Groups > Oversized.

  5. Then select the methods it applies to.
  6. Add any other conditions such as weight, quantity or price.
  7. Save & Test.
  8. Tag the product on your platform with the newly created Shipping Group.

How to Apply a Box-Based Surcharge

  1. Go to your Shipping Rules settings.

  2. Create or edit a rule.

  3. In Advanced Settings, set a Box as the condition for the rule.

  4. Configure the rule to apply a surcharge (flat amount or percentage) whenever that box is used.

For detailed steps, refer to the official documentation: Setup Box-Based Rules

Using Box Surcharge Rules for Oversized Lengths

Alternatively, you can use a Box Surcharge Rule to automatically apply an additional fee when a box meets certain size conditions, such as an oversized length.

Important Note: Box Surcharges are hidden in the overall fees applied to a shiping price. To confirm surcharge application, follow the guide here: How to Confirm if Box Surcharges Are Being Applied
