Why Two UPS Ground Saver Methods Are Available
When using UPS Ground Saver (SurePost) with ShipperHQ, you may notice that two UPS Ground Saver methods are available. This is expected behavior and is recommended to enable both for accurate rating.
UPS Ground Saver Weight-Based Services
UPS Ground Saver is returned by the UPS API under different service mappings based on package weight:
-
Packages up to 16 oz (1.0 lb)
-
Packages over 16 oz (1.0 lb)
This behavior originates from how SurePost previously operated, where Parcel Select Lightweight and Parcel Select were treated as separate services. As a result, UPS continues to return two distinct Ground Saver services internally, each triggered by a specific weight threshold.
Why Both UPS Ground Saver Methods Are Needed
Because of this UPS API behavior:
-
Both UPS Ground Saver methods are recommended to remain enabled in ShipperHQ.
-
Disabling one of the methods can result in rate discrepancies or missing rates for certain shipment weights.
Renaming UPS Ground Saver Methods Using Custom Method Names
In any given rate request, only one UPS Ground Saver method will return, depending on the shipment weight. However, when using Custom Method Names, you must configure two separate Custom Method Name rules, one for each UPS Ground Saver method.
This ensures that both weight-based services are handled correctly while displaying a single, consistent option at checkout.
More details on Custom Method Names configuration if needed.
Configuration Steps
-
Navigate to Advanced Features > Custom Method Names.
-
Create a new Custom Method Name rule for the first UPS Ground Saver method.
-
Assign a customer-facing display name.
-
Create a second Custom Method Name rule for the other UPS Ground Saver method.
-
Apply the same display name so both services appear identical to customers at checkout.
Result
-
Both UPS Ground Saver services remain active for accurate rating.
-
Customers see a single, unified shipping option.
-
Checkout remains clean and easy to understand.
Summary
-
Two UPS Ground Saver methods are recommended for rating accuracy.
-
One method applies to shipments under 1.0 lb, and the other applies to shipments over 1.0 lb.
-
Custom Method Names should be used to present a single, consistent UPS Ground Saver option to customers.
