Understanding the UPS Rural Extended Surcharge

The UPS Rural Extended Surcharge is an additional fee applied when delivering to remote or hard to reach areas. These locations often require more time, distance, or resources to service compared to standard delivery zones. This surcharge may also be referred to as a Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS) or an Extended Area Surcharge.

UPS applies this surcharge based on specific ZIP codes that fall into rural or extended delivery regions. The amount of the surcharge varies depending on the service level and the destination ZIP code. To determine whether a location qualifies, you can use the UPS ZIP code lookup tool on their website.

This surcharge is returned directly from UPS when ShipperHQ requests rates using your UPS account credentials. Because the fee is supplied by UPS through their API, ShipperHQ has no ability to modify, remove, or predict these charges. UPS does not provide advance notification of when a shipment will incur a rural or extended area surcharge. These fees are only known at the time of the rate request.
