Oversized Length Threshold

Pack long or bulky items separately

What the Oversized Length Threshold Does

The Oversized Length Threshold lets you control how ShipperHQ packs unusually long items, such as furniture, pipes, rugs, or oversized retail products. When an item’s length exceeds the value you set, ShipperHQ will pack that item separately from other items, even if a box technically exists that could fit everything together.

OversizedLengthThreshold

This field is available with an active Dimensional Packing Advanced Feature.

How Packing Behavior Works

When an item exceeds the Oversized Length Threshold value:

  • ShipperHQ does not block packing and does not prevent rates from returning

  • The item is packed separately from other items that fall below the threshold in an available box below this value

  • If no boxes are available for items in the order, ShipperHQ will group all items together using a SHQ_Custom box

This setting influences how items are grouped, not whether they can ship.

Using the Threshold with Shared Packing Rules

This same logic also applies when items are assigned to different packing rules that share a common box.

Normally, ShipperHQ will pack these items together in the shared box. However:

  • If the shared box would exceed the Oversized Length Threshold, ShipperHQ will first try to select another box that stays under the threshold, resulting in order packing separately

ShipperHQ will prioritizes smaller packaging under the Oversized Length Threshold.

When You Might Use This Setting

You may want to configure an Oversized Length Threshold if you need to:

  • Prevent long items from forcing all items, in an order, into oversized boxes

  • Reduce carrier dimensional weight or length-based surcharges

  • Improve packing accuracy for mixed carts with standard and oversized products

  • Better reflect how items are packed in your warehouse

Adjusting the Oversized Length Threshold

This setting is flexible and can be adjusted to match your specific packing goals and warehouse workflows. If you notice ShipperHQ packing items separately when you don’t expect it to, check whether one of the items exceeds the Oversized Length Threshold.

When this happens, increasing the threshold allows ShipperHQ to consider additional box options and pack items together more accurately. Updating this value can help fine-tune packing behavior, reduce unnecessary split shipments, and better reflect how orders are packed in your operation.
