How to Pack Certain Shipping Groups Separately but Allow Them to Pack With Other Groups

Overview

ShipperHQ does not include a direct setting within Shipping Groups, Boxes, or Packing Rules that prevents specific groups from being packed together. However, you can configure Packing Rules in a way that ensures some groups are always packed separately from each other while still allowing them to pack with other products when desired.

This setup is useful when you have two product groups that must never share a box but can still be packed with additional items or groups under certain conditions.

Recommended Setup

1. Create a Packing Rule for Each Shipping Group

Create one Packing Rule per Shipping Group that must be packed separately.

2. Assign Group Specific Boxes

Inside each Packing Rule:

  • Select only the boxes that should be used for products in that group.

  • If the two groups can be packed into boxes with identical dimensions, create duplicate boxes so each rule has its own unique set.

3. Ensure Packing Rules Do Not Share Boxes

Make sure the Packing Rules for these two groups do not share any of the same boxes. This guarantees ShipperHQ will never consider a single box valid for both groups, forcing them to pack separately.

4. Assign Packing Rules to Products

Assign each rule to the products belonging to its respective Shipping Group.

Allowing Other Groups or Items to Pack With Them

If other Shipping Groups or products can be packed with these groups:

  • Create a Default Packing Rule.

  • Add all boxes to the Default Packing Rule.

Because the Default Packing Rule shares boxes with the group specific packing rules, ShipperHQ will allow those additional groups or items to be packed together when applicable.

Summary

Although Shipping Groups do not directly control which groups pack together, you can achieve separated packing by using unique box sets in group specific Packing Rules while allowing other items to pack with them through a Default Packing Rule. This approach gives you flexible control over packing behavior for mixed cart scenarios.
