ShipperHQ supports rural and remote delivery pricing. How rural destination surcharges are handled depends on whether you are using live carrier rates or custom rate configurations within ShipperHQ.

This article explains how rural delivery costs are applied in each scenario and what configuration options are available. 

Live Rate Carriers

Examples: UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, and other real-time carrier integrations

When using live carrier rates, rural or remote delivery fees are handled automatically by the carrier.

  • Carriers calculate rural delivery, extended area, or remote surcharges based on the destination address

  • These surcharges are included directly in the rate response returned by the carrier API

  • ShipperHQ displays the rate exactly as returned by the carrier, including any rural adjustments

No additional configuration is required in ShipperHQ for rural delivery charges when using live carrier rates.

Custom or Static Rate Tables

When using custom rate tables or static shipping methods, rural delivery surcharges are not applied automatically.

In these cases, you can manually configure rural pricing using:

  • Shipping Rules that target specific postal codes, regions, or zones

  • Surcharges applied to defined rural or remote destinations

This approach gives you full control over how rural destinations are identified and how additional costs are applied.
