How to set up Free Shipping when only certain products are in the cart.

Overview

You offer free shipping for orders when certain products are alone in the cart. This doc covers a few options for how you can achieve this goal in ShipperHQ, depending on your needs.

Override an Existing Shipping Rate

In this scenario, you’re looking to change the shipping rate for a specific shipping method. This may be a live-rate option where rates are being returned by a carrier or a custom-rate scenario where you’ve defined the shipping rates for this method. For example, you may offer UPS Ground but for certain products you offer free UPS Ground shipping.

Part 1: Create a Shipping Group

  1. Click on “Shipping Groups” on the left nav and add a new one. Don’t worry about any of the advanced settings.

This shipping group will need to be assigned to all of the products that this rule is to apply to.

Part 2: Create the New Carrier Rule

  1. Click on “Carrier Rules” on the left nav, and then click “Add New +”.
  2. Enter a name for this rule, something like “Free Shipping for X products”.
  3. In the “Applicable Shipping Methods” section, choose the shipping method that you want to apply the rule to.
  4. In the “Conditions” section, select the shipping group you defined in Part 1 under the Must Include all these Shipping Group(s) dropdown.
  5. Under the Excludes these Shipping Group(s) dropdown, select any of your other created Shipping Groups, as well as ‘All Product Not Assigned’.
  6. In the “Actions” section, find the drop down called “Action to Perform” and choose “Set/Surcharge Shipping Methods.” Select “Set Rates” under the “Adapt Shipping Rates” drop down.
  7. Select “per shipping group” under “Apply shipping rate/percentage” and select the shipping group defined in part 1.
  8. In the “Shipping Rate” field enter $0.00
  9. Save the rule.

Conclusion

Free shipping is provided to that particular product when it is the only thing in the cart. Products that are not assigned to the shipping group from part 1 will not receive free shipping. Free shipping will not be applied if that shipping group is in the cart with other products not in the shipping group.

Show a Specific “Free Shipping” Option

In this scenario, you’re looking to show a “Free Shipping” option that is separate to the other shipping options you normally provide. For example, you may offer Standard Shipping, 2nd Day Shipping, and Overnight Shipping as your three options but when a customer is buying products eligible for free shipping you want to show Free Shipping instead of Standard Shipping.

Part 1: Create a Shipping Group

  1. Click on “Shipping Groups” on the left nav and add a new one. Don’t worry about any of the advanced settings.

Part 2: Create a Carrier Rule to Hide Standard Shipping when only Free products are in the cart

  1. Click on “Carrier Rules” on the left nav, and then click “Add New +”.
  2. Enter a name for this rule, something like “Hide Standard Shipping when Free Shipping ordered alone”.
  3. In the “Applicable Shipping Methods” section, choose the Standard Shipping option you want to hide.
  4. In the “Conditions” section, select the shipping group you defined in Part 1 under the Must Include all these Shipping Group(s) dropdown.

  6. In the “Actions” section, find the drop down called “Action to Perform” and choose “Hide Shipping Methods.”
  7. Save the rule.

Part 3: Create a Carrier Rule to Hide Free Shipping when products other than Free Shipping products are in the cart

  1. Click on “Carrier Rules” on the left nav, and then click “Add New +”.
  2. Enter a name for this rule, something like “Hide Free Shipping when non-Free items in cart”.
  3. In the “Applicable Shipping Methods” section, choose the Standard Shipping option you want to hide.
  4. In the “Conditions” section, select all shipping groups except your Free shipping group in the Includes one or more of these Shipping Group(s) dropdown.
  5. In the “Actions” section, find the drop down called “Action to Perform” and choose “Hide Shipping Methods.”
  6. Save the rule.

Conclusion

If the cart contains only items that are eligible for free shipping, your Free Shipping option will be shown. If there are products in the cart that are not eligible for Free Shipping, Standard Shipping will be shown.
